Setting the Tone for a long-awaited Return
Airborn Studios was honored to be involved from a very early stage of development, helping to define the style and look of environments with key visuals and ideate specific set pieces during pre-production.
Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy had paved the way for a sequel – one that was supposed to have a fresh style while still staying true to what had come before it.
From vis-dev to level work
After the pre-production had concluded, our 2D team went on to do concept work on numerous levels of Crash Bandicoot 4 – many of which our 3D environment team then took over for the full level art treatment. Gameplay greyboxes were provided by Toys for Bob and served as a base for the level artists who took it from there to do the asset creation, asset/level composition, and delivery in Unreal Engine.
Joining the character pipeline
Our 3D character team also got to be heavily involved, contributing over 60 characters, creatures, and skins to Crash Bandicoot 4, among them Crash classics like Dingodile, N.Gin and N.Brio, and boss enemies like the T-Rex. Additionally, Airborn Studios was delighted to do a polish pass on the titular main protagonist himself and also devise a fur treatment for him.
Big thanks to Toys for Bob and Activision for having us! If you want to see more of our work on Crash Bandicoot 4, please head over to our ArtStation page!
There are tons of examples of our concept and 3D team that worked in tandem. We also highly recommend the official Crash Bandicoot 4 artbook for a behind-the-scenes look.
